A short history of hearing aids
From ear trumpets to AI-powered devices in under 400 years.
Ear trumpets
Starting around the 1600s, people used funnel-shaped ear trumpets to collect sound and direct it into the ear. They were large, but required no power at all.
Electric and vacuum-tube aids
Around 1900, carbon-microphone devices appeared shortly after the telephone. By the 1920s–40s, vacuum tubes allowed more amplification, though early units were worn on the body with large batteries.
Transistors and miniaturization
The transistor in the early 1950s made hearing aids far smaller, leading to behind-the-ear and later in-the-ear designs.
The digital era
Digital hearing aids arrived in the 1990s, allowing precise tuning, feedback control and noise reduction. Wireless streaming, rechargeable batteries and smartphone apps followed in the 2010s.
Today
Modern devices use AI to separate speech from noise, track health, and connect to phones and TVs. Over-the-counter sales, approved in the U.S. in 2022, have made hearing help more affordable than ever.
